Thato Moatlhodi, who originates Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa has been named one of the Top 100 Young Mandela of the Future candidates.
Moatlhodi currently runs a football programme to help fight drug abuse within local communities.
“In South Africa, Nyaope has become our biggest challenge,” confirms Moathlodi.
That lead him to establish the Great Poroza Football Academy in 2013, to run various community projects including the Vutha Football Project. The football project core focus is to attract young drug addicts and offer them immediate access to rehabilitation centres.
“The project aims to empower young people who have fallen into addiction and are typically treated as outcasts within communities, by reintegrating them into communities through skills development and employment opportunities.”
Moathlodi began the project after he identified a need for rehabilitation and reintegration within his own family and the programme has since grown to involve other former addicts.
Moathlodi has been nominated in the compassion category.
