Sydwell Shikweni joined Merchants, a Dimension Data company, in September 2015 as the Transformation Director and a member of the Executive Committee.
He is responsible for driving the organisational transformation journey for Merchants with particular focus on the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment strategy, Employment Equity, diversity and inclusion.
He is also responsible for sustainable development, enabling the company’s continued competitiveness in the marketplace, while providing an ongoing contribution to South African society.
Shikweni began his career almost 20 years ago as an HR Intern in a provincial education department.
He has a long track record for setting up programmes, academies and training centres to support the development and retention of talent. His broad-multisector experience includes key Human Resources and Transformation roles in mining, construction and ICT industries.
Shikweni has helped organisations develop and execute transformation strategies in line with their business goals and legislative requirements.
He has developed employment equity plans and managed relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Seeing skills development as key to any transformation agenda, he has always looked to improve the training and talent development initiatives of the companies he works for.
He was instrumental in setting up the first leadership development programme for organised labour in the mining sector, and in developing a dictionary to help translate learning material in the industry.
An HR professional with broad experience in some challenging environments, Shikweni has proven his talent for translating organisational strategy into plans that deliver sustainable results.
Shikweni is a former Board Member of Lephalale Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) College, currently serves in the Registration Committee of the South African Board of People Practices (SABPP) and is a registered HR Master professional with Board, a Master Coach registered with the Coaches and Mentors of South Africa (COMENSA), a member of Black Management Forum (BMF), as well as a member of Institute of Directors Southern Africa (IoDSA).
Shikweni academic qualifications include an MBL and MDP-BBBEE (UNISA SBL); MA Higher Education and Training (UOFS) and a Bachelor of Admin Honours (UNIN/L).
