Food Network celebrity chef, Siba Mtongana, has received a Special Award at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, held on 27 may 2017, in Yantai (China), for her cookbook, My Table which was published by her company, The Siba Co.

The awards programme, which was established by Édouard Cointreau in 1995 to honour the very best food and wine books in the world – whether printed or digital, received entries from 205 countries this year.

Known as the Oscars of the food industry, the Gourmand Awards are held every year in a special location, and offer chefs and authors from around the world the chance to rub shoulders with the great and the good in the world of food publishing.

Mtongana, who is also a Businesswoman and Founder of The Siba Co, is no stranger to either local or international TV audiences.

Her cooking show, Siba’s Table, is one of the most popular on the Food Network, which airs in over 130 countries in Africa, Europe, the US, the Middle East, Australia and Asia. She is also the first South African to have her own show on The Cooking Channel, which reaches into 60 million households in the US alone.  My Table is her first book and made history in South Africa by becoming the bestselling cookbook ever at Woolworths. It has also had a direct influence on the kind of food people eat at home every day and has make cooking seem easy, accessible and glamorous. As exciting, it has revitalised interest in the food industry as a desirable career choice for young people.

Mtongana, born in Mdantsane, has become the ‘go to’ person for everything foodie. In this role, she says her vision is to be a good ambassador, both for her country and for the African continent.

“There’s so much young Africans have to contribute to the global community,” she said.

“It’s my goal to represent and showcase the continent’s drive, innovation and skill on the international stage. Participating in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards is just one way in which to do that.”

“It’s an honour to be celebrated in this way,” said Siba.

“Just being at the ceremony was an amazing experience – and I’m delighted My Table has received the recognition it has. Watch this space for more exciting developments.”
