At the age of 20, Magerman received a scholarship to attend Kean University in New Jersey US and following his graduation, enrolled for an MBA in Finance at Rutgers University.
After graduating in 1995, he started his career as a financial data analyst on Wall Street for Thompson Financial Group New York and thereafter joined Merrill Lynch in London on the convertible bonds desk.
Magerman returned to South Africa in 2000 to run an equity derivatives book at Gensec Bank.
Magerman is one of the founders and MD of Mergence Africa Holdings and Mergence Investment Managers. Both companies were established in 2004.
The group ethos, which resonates around the various companies, is to “Create Shared Value”, making a profit whilst addressing social needs.
This philosophy also resonates in Magerman’s private life.
He is the largest private donor to the BRAVE Foundation which works in the Aids clinic in Langa, amongst other initiatives. He sponsors Inkandla Youth’s scholarship program and he pioneered both the Mergence internship program for PDI students and the Mergence tutorial program at Tsiba University.
