Hlengani Mathebula is the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Chief Officer for Governance, International Relations, Strategy and Communications.
In addition, he is the Acting Chief Officer for Enforcement.
Mathebula is the Chairman of Black Business Circle and a former Managing Executive for ABSA Private Bank.
Mathebula is the Head of the Group Strategy and Communications department at the Reserve Bank of South Africa.
In addition, Mathebula is the Chief Advisor to Gill Marcus, Governor of the South African Reserve Bank.
Hlengani has 13 years’ experience in the banking sector, including seven at executive level. He joined ABSA Private Bank as GM in July 2005 following ABSA Bank’s acquisition by Barclays. Prior to that, Mathebula was FNB Personal Banking CEO. He was also National Director of government business at FNB Corporate.
Hlengani’s chairmanships include those of the North West Growth Fund and the African Leadership Group.
A former petrol attendant, he holds a BA and a BTh Hons from the University of the North. He attended the senior executive programmes at Harvard Business School, a management development programme at Stellenbosch University, and a marketing management programme at RAU, now University of Johannesburg.
