Volkswagen Group South Africa has announced top management changes at its manufacturing factory in Uitenhage.
Tom du Plessis has been assigned to China to head production at Volkswagen Shanghai. He will be replaced by Antonio Pinto from Volkswagen de Mexico in Puebla.
du Plessis joined Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) in March 2008 as the Head of Production after an extensive career in the motor industry both at manufacturer and supplier level.
Du Plessis was appointed to the Management Board of VWSA as the Production Director in 2009.
During his tenure as the Plant Director, Volkswagen modernised its manufacturing factory, constructed and commissioned a state of the art Press Shop and introduced the new Volkswagen Production System.
As head of Production in Shanghai, du Plessis will oversee the manufacturing of the Polo, Polo Classic, Santana, Touran, Passat as well as vehicle components.
Volkswagen Shanghai has capacity to produce over 1.3 million vehicles per year.
Antonio Pinto first joined the Volkswagen Group at Auto Europa in Portugal in 1994 as an electrical plant engineer.
Within two years he joined the management ranks and held various senior management positions at AutoEuropa until 2008 when he left the Group to pursue a career outside of the motor industry.
In 2012 he rejoined the Volkswagen Group to manage the body shop, paint shop and final assembly at Volkswagen de Mexico in Puebla.
“We are delighted that Tom’s achievements in South Africa have been recognised by the Group and wish him well with this foreign assignment. At the same time we welcome Pinto to our Board of Management at Volkswagen Group South Africa,” said David Powels, Managing Director of VWSA.
Both appointments became effective during the month of May 2014.
